As far back as I can recall, I’ve had a pencil in my hand. Though driven by interest in the natural sciences and eventually becoming a physician, I have always kept my artistic side engaged.
My Dad influenced my interest in aviation with stories and photos of his time in service in WW2. My Mom encouraged me to keep developing my artistic skills. I turned to watercolor in college and through innumerable drawings and paintings, developed some skill in maritime , aviation and landscape subjects. I am heavily influenced by Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent. Since my retirement from medical practice, I have been able to devote significantly more time to art. Though still primarily working in watercolor, I have broadened out into oil painting and graphite drawings. My association with the Artists Gallery has afforded me organized Plein Air opportunities as well as frequent juried shows. My subjects range from maritime, watermen, rural landscapes, travel and aviation. I am interested in more figurative and Plein Air work. |

With time come new interests. I have been a resident of Virginia Beach for 37 years. Once a veterinarian in a previous time, I have a somewhat independent and creative inclination. Over the years, I’ve helped design and built residential and commercial buildings as well as running my own veterinary practice. Both of these skills are carried over to my artwork. My art gives me a chance to concentrate and focus on details, similar to the focus I had while doing surgery. Painting and drawing, of course is quite a bit less stressful but certainly as enjoyable.
I mainly use acrylics on canvas but also use pencil and pen. Oftentimes, I will take a photograph, print it on the canvas which is then used as a catalyst for the actual painting. I reference my work as “industrial surrealism” since my art frequently has components including straight lines, curves and other ideas taken from industry and mechanization.
Many industrial and commercial forms and fittings or imaginary objects are used to represent my stylized version of real life. All my works originate from personal experience and thoughts. I paint to see reality from a slightly different perspective. When people view my work, my hope is that they will take the time to see the minute aspects of the hidden and overt details of my paintings and enjoy a view of our surroundings through my eyes and imagination.
