Artist Statement
It was love at first sight for me with origami when as a young child I saw it demonstrated on TV. There was something magical about how a sequence of folds could turn a simple square of paper into the shape of a flower, an animal or most anything one could think of. I love the wonderful variety of textures and patterns of paper, and its versatility in both practical and creative uses which appeals equally to the engineering and artistic sides of my nature. I enjoy the challenge of pairing a paper’s pattern with the geometry of the folds in the origami, such as on the wings of my butterfly necklaces. And sometimes I enjoy just playing with a piece of paper and seeing what results from it. My greatest pleasure as an artist is meeting somebody and seeing that they are wearing a piece of my jewelry.
kATHY GROOK
Sea Glass Treasures by Kathy
Kathy and John Grook are natives of Hampton Roads VA and grew up loving the sea. They both attended Old Dominion University and together served over 60 years in City Government. Since retirement, they now spend their time between Cape Charles, VA and Florida. A love of the sea inspired them to start searching for sea glass and Kathy soon began to design jewelry and gifts. Her designs are unique and none of the sea glass is altered in any way. Most of the collection comes from the Chesapeake Bay.
Kathy is also an artist of acrylic paintings and specializes in still life, landscapes, and seascapes.
John and Kathy have a passion for mission work and the profits from their business go to help various causes like the homeless, children’s ministries and international missions in Honduras, Nicaragua, Jamaica and Haiti.

I enjoy painting watercolor and acrylic, but watercolor is my passion. I Started out painting acrylic and then began exploring photography, drawing, and improving my color techniques for watercolor. I enjoy Plain Air painting, which I primarily paint in acrylic, sometimes shifting to watercolor. I enjoy finding beautiful moments in random objects, places, and flowers that I discover while traveling. My paintings are both realistic and detailed forms, and my current personal challenge is to better express myself through sketching and drawing. I love the challenges that painting offers as I continue to discover new texture, color, and unique scenes.

Sapphire Ceramics - Kelly Riggs
My clay journey began twenty-five years ago with an Introduction to Ceramics class. That first class turned into more than I can count, learning from Richmond’s best ceramic artists.
I split my time between Virginia Beach and Richmond where my home studio is located. It is a pleasure to walk into my studio, coffee mug in hand, to check on the previous day’s work. Daily walks in nature inform the pieces I make.
My work is simple in form and includes carving, handmade stamps and found texture. A piece focuses on its future use, letting what it contains shine through.
My pots aren’t complete until they contain something: fresh flowers, acorns or shells collected from a nature walk or brimming with fresh fruit. I believe functional ceramics connect the maker to user, in real time and place. I am passionate about making pots people choose to use everyday.
For the past 10 years, I have shown my work through GrowRVA’s farmer’s markets. I show my work each year at The Gallery Show in Richmond and am an exhibiting artist with The Artist’s Gallery.
Previous shows include: Arts Around The Lake, Arts in the Park, Art on the Avenue, Invitationals to Pop ups and three solo shows at St. Mathias Episcopal Church
