I began my woodworking career as a framing carpenter in the early ’70s. I progressed to trim work and cabinets followed by a career as a general contractor specializing in custom home construction. I started turning in 2001 and joined the Tidewater Turners of VA, a club for wood turners. I have been an active member since, serving two terms on the board of directors, demonstrating turning techniques at meetings, and teaching classes for the club as well as Woodcraft Supply. For my art I use trees that have been insect-infested or diseased, giving each piece of wood many unique features. I try to visualize the form before I start. Sometimes that works, sometimes not! Each piece is a “one of a kind” creation, never to be duplicated by Mother Nature again. I really love turning wood and hope you enjoy the art.

I have spent the better part of a lifetime struggling to find a voice. My voice. I’m a self-taught artist, you see, and I recognize that I’ve had a lot of personal hurdles to jump; not feeling like I’m “enough” would be the biggest.
In the process of learning art – I have copied artists that I love, flitting from one type of art to another: painting (oil, acrylic and watercolor), collage, pastel, colored pencil, graphite drawing, sculpture, fiber art, book making, and jewelry making. I have emulated their artistic styles and their subjects – and like trying on clothes and pre-worn shoes at Goodwill – the final result was decent, but somehow not satisfying.

jorge a. saenz
Jorge Saenz is an abstract artist based in Virginia Beach where he maintains a studio and commits to his artwork full-time, enhancing and refining his unique methodology.
Saenz has hand-carved his own niche in the abstract realm, drawing inspiration from prolific artists like De Kooning, Rothko and Frankenthaler.
A close glance at his work reveals multiple layers of shapes, patterns, and color fluctuation, often completed with translucent drips. Saenz’s unapologetic usage of various mediums and contrasting color temperatures hint at his romantic approach to abstract art.
He has been exhibiting throughout the Hampton Roads area for several years and his artwork graces many homes internationally and in the US. For more information about his art please visit his website: texturalabstracts.com and Instagram @texturalabstract.art
