I consider altered books to be a method of eliciting a further message from the printed page, augmenting the initial narrative created by the author. Adding an artistic twist to the physical form of the book allows me to merge my own impressions and message with that of the author. This provides the viewer with an added dimension to consider regarding the original literary work.
I began altering books art after seeing the art of Su Blackwell. With very few people working in this medium, I essentially had to break new ground, experimenting with a variety of techniques and honing my methods to get the desired results. As a result, I have developed a process for carving the books that I have not seen any other artist world-wide replicate. I’m very proud of being a pioneer in this art form! Some people have criticized me for damaging books, but I prefer to think that I’m giving them new life. Most of my books are obtained from charity shops and are at their last stop before the landfill. I rescue them, transform them, and turn them into treasures to be appreciated. Maggie Lina Kerrigan |

Dick Rawls, a dedicated and passionate oil painter, calls the vibrant city of Virginia Beach his home. His studio, nestled within the creative confines of the Artists Gallery within VBAC, serves as his sanctuary where he continually hones his craft.
Rawls’ artistic journey is deeply rooted in his admiration for the impressionists. He believes in learning from the masters, often copying their paintings to understand their techniques and perspectives. This practice has not only enriched his knowledge but also allowed him to incorporate these time-honored techniques into his own unique style. Rawls is a firm believer in the power of consistency. Visitors to the Artists Gallery will often find him at his easel, immersed in his work. His commitment to his craft is evident in his regular painting routine, which he maintains with unwavering discipline. His artwork, a blend of learned techniques and personal flair, reflects his journey as an artist. Each stroke on the canvas is a testament to his dedication and love for impressionism. I have been fine-tuning my photography skills for several years now and have had the good fortune of becoming a member of The Artists Gallery family. After spending more than 35 years as a graphic designer and fulfilling the requirements needed by clients, I am thrilled to be able spread my wings and fly freely into another medium. It is the first time in my life that I have been able to express myself through an art form. It is an exciting opportunity.

Ralph Thomas originally of Durham, North Carolina, is a self-taught portrait artist who can take a photographic portrait and render a piece as if he was painting “by numbers” as he describes it. The ever-jubilant Thomas first fell in love with painting at the age of seven when his mother, on a summer visit from Detroit gave him a paint-by-numbers set. As stated before, Ralph is strictly self-taught, learning the source of light and technique of highlight, mid tone, shadow, reflected light and cast shadow by corresponding numbers to hues learned how to paint while spending time with his mother.
“We had so much fun during her visits south” said Thomas who was raised by his Aunt Cora and Uncle Charlie Jackson. Thomas has fond memories of trying to learn how cartoon artists drew Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, Donald Duck, all images that would eventually serve as a foundation for a self-taught portrait artist carving out his niche in the burgeoning art scene of Coastal Virginia. The 20 year Navy veteran with gregarious spirit. It was while serving in the Navy he found he could sell his paintings. Thomas has built a list of repeat clientele over the years. In 2017, Thomas painted a suite of jazz inspired pieces to benefit the Jazz Legacy Foundation, a non-profit organization that benefits high school music programs. Elizabeth works in oil as well as acrylic. She is most noted for her paintings of Angels and
Symbolic Realms of the Spiritual. Elizabeth feels that there is nothing in this world that is mundane or unholy if it is seen with the "inner eye." Elizabeth believes that the healing aspects of being surrounded with "the Beautiful, the True, the Good," whether from Nature or our own inner nature inspires her to keep growing and creating. For Elizabeth, Angels are our Constant Companions of Protection and Love. She also provides "Soul Symbol" paintings on commission. |
