"Glass Houses" 16 x 20, Encaustic, $500 In college I was a biology major. I was fascinated by the shapes and forms of microscopic organisms. This artwork incorporates imagery of diatoms, which are made of silica.
Encaustic is comprised of beeswax, damar resin and pigment. It must be made molten by heating on a griddle in order to paint with it. To ensure adherence to the surface it needs to be fused with another heat source such as a heat gun or torch. It can have a luxurious and glasslike surface or a very textural one.
