I have been fusing glass on and off for about 20 years. My first experience with glass was in South Dakota where I learned to make fused use glass pendants. Following several introductory glass fusing classes, I was fortunate to spend eight years in Hawaii. During this time I continued to experiment with glass fusing and learned a great deal through trial and error. I still lean toward a color palette of blues and greens, reflecting the colors of the islands. Since my return to the US mainland in 2012, I have had the opportunity to learn new techniques and improve my skills, not only through practice but also through classes in Maryland and New Jersey, and via recorded video.
To create my fused glass pieces, I use sheet glass, glass "stringers" and glass powders to create various elements which I assemble and then fire in a kiln to fuse the elements into a single piece. I may fuse a piece only once, or more than once to include additional elements or to create texture. Once fusing is complete, I typically "cold work" each piece to smooth the edges before returning it to the kiln to "slump" it into the final shape. |
New Artist John Rafferty
I have been drawing and painting since my youth, spending idle indoor time with a pencil and whatever paper or drawing surface was available. I took art and mechanical drawing classes in high school and was awarded the art and mech. drawing awards in my senior year.
I put my art on the shelf for many years while navigating life and work. I started taking evening or weekend classes at d'Art, Moca and SOFA about 20 years ago and the art spark reignited. I have entered several exhibitions at the VBAC and garnered a couple of honorable mention awards and have sold several works. |
