When I purchased my first camera in so many years, photography had moved from film through bad digital cameras to great digital cameras. Even Adobe Photoshop did not exist before, it had been created in a rudimentary form, then gone through several updates. Learning all this new technology was a blast. I started at my barn, my kind friends would bring their horses out and we would play. Those friends just keep coming and calling me to share their horses, their dogs, their kids. I will forever be grateful to those friends as they believed in me and helped me in every step. I learned the most important lessons with them. My goal at every shoot is to capture what is in your heart. It is always an honor when you share that with me and to be a part of your life story.

Mabelle lansdell
Mabelle Lansdell is a full-time artist and art instructor; her art lives in the spaces between dreaming and reality. Her paintings merge symbolic surreal and fantastic elements with realistic atmospheres, unveiling a world where everything is possible. Often whimsical and gentle surrealism, most of her work also carries deeper inspirational and philosophical messages.
Mabelle has been creating art all her life even as a child, her art has had a style of its own, and expressive baby doll eyes have always been a staple of her work.
Much of her inspiration comes from her children, her childhood years spent in Peru, mythology, legends, and her own experiences.
“I consider a painting successful when it gets the viewer to pause, take a closer look, and then smile”

I am a local Hampton Roads artist working in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and wood working. My formal art training includes a Bachelor of Arts in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Pittsburgh. My studies focused on 20th Century buildings and art but also included Renaissance and Medieval European works. I have a strong penchant for the Abstract Expressionists. My studio training is mostly informal, working alongside the many talented artists I have had the fortune to know along this journey.
For many years I constructed art based on strict geometric forms, as a draftsmen or architect would do. I would work out the plan on a computer and then paint the image on canvas. I made extensive use of T-squares, triangles and drafting tape, creating hard edges and swatches of solid colors. Over time I moved to creating more free forms, based on sub-conscious exploration. I do not set out with an image in mind but let the images emerge from my thoughts and feelings at the time. There may be recognizable forms in my abstractions however they are not always forethoughts.
My work has been shown at several local venues including Portsmouth Arts and Music, Artistic Creations in Virginia Beach, and the Suffolk Art Gallery. I am very excited to now be displaying work at the Virginia Beach Art Center.

My passion to record the incredible beauty of Nature and Wild Animals was ignited during a Photography trip to Kenya in 2013. I was totally new to Wildlife Photography then but was awestruck by what I experienced and was determined to learn, practice daily, become proficient and go back. What followed were trips to Kenya, Tanzania, Chile, Costa Rica, Alaska, and many home based East Coast locations.
At about the same time, I started taking oil painting classes. After fifteen years of study and practice, I enjoy painting Wildlife and Nature's Landscapes. My favorite subjects are Shorebirds and Native Flowers using my own photography as reference. With both photography AND painting, I have the ability to share twice the beauty of the story of what was happening at the time I came upon the incredible scenes that nature shares.

I have been fine-tuning my photography skills for several years now and have had the good fortune of becoming a member of The Artists Gallery family. After spending more than 35 years as a graphic designer and fulfilling the requirements needed by clients, I am thrilled to be able spread my wings and fly freely into another medium. It is the first time in my life that I have been able to express myself through an art form. It is an exciting opportunity.
